Black locust is an awesome wood. it's most common use that i know of is wood boat building on the east coast of the usa - yachts, sailboats, etc. black locust and osage orange are the finest woods that grow in the usa. i base this on their physical properties. these are both native exotics. exotic because they aren't widely used or known.. Even black locust has small thorns on the smaller branches. i often thought the color and grain texture of honey locust might be neat for wood but i wasn't even attempting any woodworking in those days. as far as hardness black locust is similar to hickory and honey locust is similar to hard maple.. Black locust. black locust is the strongest and most rot-resistant wood indigenous to north america. it makes an incredibly durable decking material that will remain beautiful throughout years of outdoor exposure. building with black locust is your most sound environmental choice. black locust grows faster than any other known hardwood tree..
