Clinker is a method of constructing hulls of boats by fixing wooden planks so that the planks overlap along their edges. the overlapping joint is called a land. if the plank is too short for the hull, it would be necessary to extend the plank by joining with another piece of wood (xxx joints are common).. Strip planking wooden boats. the strip planking method of boat building could be described as a form of carvel planking. however, using strips is a form of construction which is much more suitable for the back yard builder. using this method a beautifully round bilged boat can be built with less skill and tools than with carvel.. The ashcroft method. the ashcroft method is an alternative to either carvel or lapstrake/clinker planking on small boats. it was intended to be used on the type of construction where the boat would be built upside-down over moulds. the moulds were to be set up and joined by longitudinal ribbands and stringers in the usual way..
