If you watch a planing boat in motion, you'll notice that about the front third of the boat will be out of the water. with less boat in the water, there's less drag, and with that reduced drag comes better fuel economy, to a point. getting on plane. the smaller the boat, the more effect crew positioning will have on the boat's ability to plane.. For years that i had traveled, im always taking plane more often than boats. yet, i believe that boats are safer than planes. if a boat catches a fire, or its engine get trouble, there is still ample time to move to a safer area, or jump to a life boat and bail out before the boat sinks.. Comparing stats, traveling by a boat wold be safer. 0 4 0. true that more people die in car accidents than plane or boats.but the ratio of people in cars and that in plane and boats is different.there are far more people in cars at a particular time as on boat or plane..

As to which is safer air or sea - it depends on how you crunch the numbers... air transportation wins out on a "per mile" basis. boats win out on a per trip basis. but the "per mile" statistic is a bit tainted, as a plane can fly over 3,000 miles in less time then it takes a cruise ship to travel 200 miles..
